For the second time this week, I’ve found myself getting up at 6am to go to the gym and lift heavy things. Why? In the name of self care. For some, this may seem counterintuitive, after all, who wants to get up earlier than they have to? Especially if they aren’t being paid (True story: there are only 2 instances in which I will get out of bed before 6am: if I’m being paid to work or if I’m traveling).
But before I continue, let’s back up a few steps. First off, hello December! Thanksgiving is officially behind us and we are rapidly moving to the end of the year and I am moving towards Christmas. While they can be exciting, the holidays are also often a stressful time as well. We spend time stressing about gifts, holiday decorations, parties, getting together with family and getting everything just right. Many people also come out of this month having over-indulged by enjoying too much food, sweets and alcohol and generally end up feeling less than stellar- hence, everyone’s desperate attempt to “cleanse” in January.
That’s why this month I want to emphasize the importance of self-care and making sure to take time to address your needs and spend at least a few moments each day caring for yourself.
For me, this manifested as a need to start working out with a friend of mine in the morning, as I’ve been less inspired to lift or do anything in the gym other than teach my Spinning classes. I know I need to start being more mobile and active again and because I’ve been uninspired, I enlisted the help of one of my most enthusiastic lifting friends, Jim, who just happens to work out at 6am. While it’s not my idea time of choice, it’s a time where I won’t have any other conflicts, other than the standing date I have with my warm, comfy bed.
My self care this month is focused around being more active outside of my Spinning classes and getting back into lifting again. For someone else, it might mean setting aside time to read a bit each day, or go for a walk.
What are the holidays like for you this month and do you have a plan for self care?
